TThe other day I was wondering how people in the olden days used to wake up and head for work as there was no alarm clock. In the modern world, we can easily access and download ample alarm apps for free on our phones and use them. Alarms are a necessity for humans, otherwise we can’t reach work on time. But when there were no phones there were clocks to wake up — I used to have clocks at my home. My grandparents use to wake up with the sound of the clock — Tick, Tick, Tick.

I used to hear that same ticking sound when I was a little girl but the question arises: how people woke up when there were no clocks and phones?

The answer is that humans used to be the alarm clock. In the 19th century in Britain and Ireland special workers used to wake up people in the morningthey were called the knocker-uppers.
